World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
The LFF’s just revealed how it’s going to send everyone home in October, there’s an absolute pile-up of new releases both in cinemas and in India specifically, and the Russo Brothers have weighed in on being (sort of) dethroned.
Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
Biggest bit of festival news: the BFI London Film Festival has announced its closing film for the 70th edition (October 7–18th) — Jesse Eisenberg’s musical comedy The Debut, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, which gets its UK premiere at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on October 18 before Lionsgate releases it here properly in January. It follows Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, which played LFF back in 2024, and comes hot on the heels of the previously announced opener, Simon Stone’s Elsinore — Andrew Scott playing the doomed actor Ian Charleson, which sounds like an early awards-season contender in its own right.
On general release, it’s another packed Friday: Ice Cream Man, Eli Roth’s gleefully unhinged slasher, finally lands in UK cinemas today (having already been out in the US for a few days), while American audiences get the rom-com One Night Only — Julia Fox and Callum Turner as two singles who keep almost-but-not-quite finding each other across one chaotic night. Super Troopers 3 gets a release on both sides of the Atlantic (I’m not sure I ever saw Super Troopers or Super Troopers 2, so I’m not terribly excited about that news!) Other UK releases today includes the Glenn Close arthouse picture The Summer Book (see my review here) and re-releases of Taika Waititi’s The Hunt for the Wilderpeople (a 10 year anniversary) and Practical Magic (ahead of the sequel’s release – Practical Magic 2 – on September 11th).
Speaking of things nobody predicted: Joe and Anthony Russo have responded to Spider-Man: Brand New Day overtaking Avengers: Endgame‘s numbers, which — given they directed Endgame — must be a slightly odd one to process publicly. Graciously, the pair congratulated the cast and crew with the comment “The gauntlet has been passed.” At least, that will be true until Avengers: Doomsday comes out in December, when Spidey-director Destin Daniel Cretton might need to return the favour!
As previously flagged, over in India today’s an absolute scrum at the box office: five films have opened at once, including Pankaj Tripathi’s Oh My Dog, R. Madhavan’s inventor biopic GDN, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC: The Bloody Valentine, plus Aryabhatt Ka Zero and Hanuman Ansh — with Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani’s Awarapan 2 still to come next week as the month’s proper headline clash. All of this while Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues doing serious business there too.
