World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
D23 delivers Marvel’s X-Men cast and a wall of first Disney looks; Spider-Man makes it three weekends running; dinosaurs duke it out for second; and China’s Odyssey weekend still looks set to be Nolan’s biggest yet.
Morning all — Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours and today’s roundup opens somewhere rather glittery: Anaheim, where Disney’s biennial fan jamboree – D23 – has spent the weekend firing out announcements faster than I can type them.
“To me, my X-Men” at D23: (WARNING: Spoiler in this paragraph for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.) After years of speculation, Marvel Studios used Friday night’s Disney Entertainment Showcase to put the X-Men rumour mill out of its misery. Director Jake Schreier — fresh off Thunderbolts* — took the stage alongside Sadie Sink, whose Jean Grey debuted in Spider-Man: Brand New Day last month, before introducing the rest of the line-up: Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver crashing the panel via video message to reveal he’ll play Mister Sinister. (It’s particularly great to see Inde Navarrette getting some immediate mainstream recognition after her astonishing performance in Obsession. And I know Adam Driver uber-fan Ronnie Clements of the excellent Screen Gems site will love his involvment!) The untitled film lands in cinemas exclusively on 5th May 2028.
Other D23 announcements: Elsewhere across the showcase, Marvel also teased VisionQuest and dropped a fresh look at December’s Avengers: Doomsday, while the wider Disney slate saw first looks land for Zootopia 3, a Simpsons Movie sequel, live-action Tangled, Coco 2, Ahsoka season two and a Lilo & Stitch 2 tease featuring ‘Experiment 624’ aka Angel. A genuinely enormous few days for Disney fans, and with a final day of the event happening today, there might be more news for tomorrow’s movie news.
Spider-Man makes it three in a row: Spider-Man: Brand New Day held off two new dinosaur-themed challengers to top the US box office for a third consecutive weekend, pulling in an estimated $65–67 million and pushing its North American haul to roughly $783 million — good enough for fifth on the all-time domestic chart, just ahead of Top Gun: Maverick. That’s a hefty 53% weekend-to-weekend drop, but when you opened as big as this one did, that’s simply the cost of doing business.
Dinosaurs duke it out for second: As for the newcomers, Warner Bros.’ The End of Oak Street — Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor’s family-in-peril sci-fi thriller, and the one leading Friday’s UK releases list — opened to around $20–23 million domestically off a B CinemaScore (opening-night survey), while Paramount’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie ran it close with a similar haul off a much stronger A CinemaScore, suggesting the pups may have the better legs of the two over the coming weeks. (This matches my 6-year-old grandson’s “That was AWESOME” comment!) Meanwhile Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey quietly kept plugging away in fourth place, passing The Dark Knight Rises to become Nolan’s second-highest-grossing film ever in North America.
China’s Odyssey weekend shapes up to be a record-breaker: Continuing our monitoring of the China opening for Nolan…. following on from yesterday’s stonking $15.9 million opening day, early trade estimates suggest The Odyssey‘s Chinese three-day could land somewhere in the region of $40 million — which, if it holds, would edge out both Tenet and Oppenheimer to become Nolan’s biggest weekend in the country to date.
That’s all for today. More as the week’s news develops.
