World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
India’s National Film Awards move outside Delhi for the first time in 72 years; a belated farewell to Doc Martin’s Stephanie Cole; and happy birthday to Anthony Mackie.
Afternoon everyone. Bit of a late post today for the Movie News, as I’ve been travelling back from Portugal where I’ve been on holiday for two weeks. But – better late than never – here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last day.
India’s National Film Awards break with 72 years of tradition: President Droupadi Murmu presented the 72nd National Film Awards yesterday at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat, against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity — the first time in the ceremony’s history that it’s been held outside Delhi, part of a wider government push to spread cultural events across the country. Aditya Suhas Jambhale’s political thriller Article 370 took Best Feature Film, with Yami Gautam winning Best Actress for the same film; Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan shared Best Actor for Bramayugam and Chandu Champion respectively. Veteran actor Anant Nag was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest cinema honour, capping a genuinely significant day for the country’s film industry.
A belated farewell to Stephanie Cole: I’m also today flagging, a few days late, the death of English actress Stephanie Cole, who died last Friday aged 84. Best known for roles in Tenko, Doc Martin and a long stint on Coronation Street, Cole built a genuinely substantial career across British film and television over several decades — a loss that deserved a mention here sooner.
Happy birthday to Anthony Mackie: Rounding things off, happy birthday today to Captain America: Brave New World and The Hurt Locker actor Anthony Mackie, who turns 48.
