World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
Spider-Man: Brand New Day becomes the fourth-biggest film of all time worldwide, Coyote vs. Acme rescues itself from the scrapheap in style, and Venice’s Lido gears up for tomorrow’s pre-opening screening.
We round off the month with the confirmed weekend movie box office numbers, as Spidey edges nearer to an all time Top 3 place.
Spider-Man cements its place among cinema’s biggest ever: Spider-Man: Brand New Day topped the worldwide box office for a fifth consecutive weekend, adding a confirmed $22.2 million in North America (for a regional total of $891.5 million) and pushing its global tally to $2.33 billion. That’s enough to overtake both Titanic and Avatar: The Way of Water to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in cinema history worldwide — trailing only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the last of which it’s now on course to pass in North America too within the next couple of weekends. A genuinely historic run for a film that’s now well into its second month in cinemas.
Coyote vs. Acme has the last laugh: In rather heartwarming counterprogramming, Coyote vs. Acme — the Warner Bros. film infamously shelved for a tax write-off back in 2023 before Ketchup Entertainment rescued it — opened in second place with $15.4 million, the biggest debut in Ketchup’s history and a genuinely well-earned one, given its 95% Rotten Tomatoes score and ‘A’ CinemaScore. Director Dave Green summed up the mood nicely on social media: “Which means one thing. WE WON.” Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars, meanwhile, fared rather less well in third with roughly $8 million, undone by poor word-of-mouth on social media.
Venice’s Lido preps for its pre-opening screening: Away from the multiplex, tomorrow sees the traditional pre-opening screening ahead of Wednesday’s official start to the 83rd Venice Film Festival — this year, a restoration of Tinto Brass’s 1967 giallo Deadly Sweet, screening in the Sala Darsena. It’s an historic tradition that tends to get overshadowed by the main event. With Venice now just two days out, expect the festival coverage to take over properly from tomorrow.
