A mix-up with too much Running, Venice heads into tonight’s Golden Lion ceremony with NAZA’s record-breaking ovation still looming large, Diljit Dosanjh makes Punjabi history at Wembley and happy birthday to Sydney Sweeney and Emmy Rossum.
Morning all — a correction to start with today, then straight into the biggest night of Venice’s calendar. Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
Correction: yesterday’s Runner mix-up: A proper mea culpa to start — yesterday’s edition wrongly credited Gal Gadot’s film for the UK cinema release. That film, The Runner, actually skipped cinemas entirely and went straight to Prime Video on 3rd September. The film that opened in UK cinemas yesterday was instead Runner, Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson’s action-comedy about a courier racing to deliver a liver from Brisbane to the Gold Coast within three hours, directed by Scott Waugh (Act of Valor, The Expendables 4). (My Flickering Dreams colleague the Reverend Andy Godfrey summed it up as “Perfectly acceptable friday night action pop corn movie. A couple of laughs and nice action set pieces but completely and utterly predictable from start to finish.“). Two very similarly-titled films releasing a week apart clearly proved one coincidence too many — apologies for the confusion, and thanks to a sharp-eyed reader for the correction.
Venice heads into its final night with everything still to play for: The 83rd Venice Film Festival wraps tonight with the Golden Lion ceremony, and the Maggie Gyllenhaal-led jury has a genuinely wide field to choose from across 21 competition entries. The film to beat, on ovation length alone, remains NAZA — Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor’s Gaza documentary, added to the competition only on 24th August following safety concerns, which received a festival-record 25-minute standing ovation on Thursday. Whether the jury rewards that reception with the top prize itself is another matter entirely; past Venice juries have occasionally gone against the loudest ovation of the festival. Robert Pattinson’s Primetime, Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine and Werner Herzog’s latest (with the dodgy title Bucking Fastard) all remain squarely in the conversation too. Diljit Dosanjh makes history at Wembley Stadium: Slightly ‘movie-adjacent’, but Punjabi actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh is set to make history at London’s Wembley Stadium by performing the first ever Punjabi-music concert at the world famous arena. Dosanjh has appeared in over 35 feature releases in India since his first film in 2010.
Happy birthday to Sydney Sweeney and Emmy Rossum: Rounding things off, happy birthday today to The Housemaid and Anyone But You star Sydney Sweeney, who turns 28, alongside Shameless and The Day After Tomorrow actress Emmy Rossum, who turns 40.
