Practical Magic 2 finally ends Spider-Man’s historic run worldwide, The Odyssey overtakes Jurassic World to become Universal’s biggest film ever, and the UK chart gets its own witchy new leader too.
Morning all — confirmed weekend numbers and there’s a genuine changing-of-the-guard story at the top of the chart today. Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
Practical Magic 2 dethrones Spider-Man after six weeks at number one: Susanne Bier’s Practical Magic 2 reunited Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman for a confirmed $30 million US opening (plus $16 million from 77 international markets, for a $46 million worldwide debut), finally ending Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s historic six-consecutive-weekend run atop the US chart. Reviews have been unkind — 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, similar to the original’s 30% — but a solid B+ CinemaScore suggests word-of-mouth could carry it further. Brand New Day, for its part, isn’t going anywhere: it added another $8.4 million in the US to remain the second-highest-grossing film in US box office history, just behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with $936.6 million now the target.
The Odyssey quietly becomes Universal’s biggest film ever, worldwide: Behind the top two, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey took $7.4 million in the US (a US total of $600 million, making it the 18th film in history to cross that line) and $14.6 million worldwide in its ninth weekend. Buried in that update is a genuinely enormous milestone: the film has now overtaken Jurassic World to become Universal’s highest-grossing release ever at the worldwide box office. Angel Studios’ Runner, the Alan Ritchson/Owen Wilson action-comedy, opened fourth in the US with $6.4 million, while Paul Greengrass’s The Uprising landed a more modest eighth with $3.25 million.
The UK gets its own new chart leader: Turning to the UK, Practical Magic 2 opened strongly here too, with a $3.9 million (roughly £2.9 million) debut — the film’s best-performing territory worldwide, and well ahead of the original 1998 film’s £997,000 opening. The Odyssey, meanwhile, added $1.2 million in the UK for a $113.7 million running total, keeping it inside the territory’s all-time top ten. Disney’s Oasis documentary Don’t Look Back In Anger also continues to perform strongly following its £675,000 preview-day haul, while Studiocanal’s brilliant Pressure and Signature’s Fall 2 both add to a genuinely packed early-autumn UK slate.
