TIFF: The Market closes its inaugural edition: Today marks the final day of TIFF: The Market, the festival’s first-ever official industry marketplace, which ran alongside the main event from Sept. 10th with government backing of around $23 million. More than 150 sales and promotional agencies — including AGC Studios, FilmNation, Anton and WME Independent — met with over 130 confirmed buyers from 49 countries across the week. An ambitious bid to turn Toronto into a proper year-round dealmaking hub rather than just an awards-season launchpad. Early reports from insiders suggest a broader, if somewhat softer, transaction market than organisers might have hoped for, spanning everything from finished films to early-stage financing packages — but for a first edition, simply getting 150-plus agencies and 130-plus buyers into one room is a start.
The People’s Choice Award race stays wide open: Meanwhile, voting continues among TIFF’s 2,600 accredited badge holders for Sunday’s People’s Choice Award, an prize with a genuine Oscar pedigree — 22 of its past winners have gone on to Best Picture nominations, 7 of those converting into wins. Unusually for this stage of the calendar, there’s no clear consensus frontrunner yet, which trade watchers reckon says more about a wide-open awards season than anything specific to this year’s TIFF slate. Expect the winner announced here the moment Sunday’s ceremony wraps.
Sally Field’s Emmy vindicates a performance we praised back in May: I don’t normally publicise the Emmy awards, held on Sunday night, but yesterday I missed one key bit of film news that came out of this year’s event. Sally Field won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures, her fourth Emmy win and, at 79, the oldest actress ever to take the category. It’s a lovely vindication of our own review of the film back in May, where we singled out Field’s performance as Tova as the film’s beating heart even where the material around her leaned sentimental. Field, visibly stunned, told the room “this wasn’t supposed to happen” — though anyone who saw her turn as Tova could have told her otherwise.
Happy Birthday to Molly Shannon and Nick Jonas: Rounding things off, happy birthday today to Saturday Night Live alumna Molly Shannon, who turns 60, alongside singer-actor Nick Jonas (from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) who turns 34 today.
