Avengers: Endgame Encore sets a UK re-release record at £4.12m as its worldwide total closes in on Avatar, Nani’s The Paradise chases a career record in India, Segilola Ogidan wraps her I.C.U. psychological thriller in Lagos, farewells to Canadian director Anne Claire Poirier and Finnish actress Seela Sella, and happy birthday to Zachary Levi and Nicholas Galitzine.
Morning all — the promised UK figures are finally in, plus a proper weekly tour through Bollywood and Nollywood. Here’s what happened in the world of movies over the last day and the wider week.
Endgame Encore confirmed as a UK-Ireland record-breaker too: As trailed yesterday, Disney’s re-release of Avengers: Endgame topped the UK-Ireland weekend chart with £4.12 million — the biggest opening ever for a re-release in the territory, from a strong £7,678 average across 537 cinemas. Worldwide, the film’s $86 million weekend ($26 million in North America, $60 million internationally) has pushed its lifetime worldwide total to roughly $2.885 billion, now only around $39 million behind Avatar for the outright global crown. China led its international markets with $13.5 million, followed by the UK/Ireland’s $5.4 million, Mexico, India, Japan and Italy. At the UK box office, Resident Evil and Heart of the Beast came in second and (a close) third with just over £2 million each.
Nani chases a career record in India: Zooming out on the week in Indian cinema, Nani’s Telugu blockbuster The Paradise has emerged as the standout story, on course to become the actor’s biggest-ever grosser within its opening weekend alone, having already passed 2 million ticket sales on BookMyShow. Elsewhere, Hanuman Ansh continues its remarkable late run, adding another ₹86 crore (about $9 million) in its eighth week to reach roughly ₹386 crore worldwide ($40m), with makers now eyeing a full 100-day theatrical run for a film that cost just ₹2 crore to make. India’s own little Obsession!
Segilola Ogidan wraps her I.C.U. in Lagos: In Nollywood news this week, director Segilola Ogidan has completed principal photography on The I.C.U., a psychological thriller inspired by a deeply personal near-death experience and billed as the first instalment in a planned “Hospital Chronicles” trilogy — her third feature as director, shot earlier this year across Lagos.
Farewells to Anne Claire Poirier and Seela Sella: Away from new releases, Canadian director Anne Claire Poirier has died aged 94, the filmmaker behind Before the Time Comes, A Scream from Silence and Beyond Forty, and a significant figure in Québécois documentary cinema. Finnish actress Seela Sella has also died, aged 89, remembered for a long career spanning stage, screen and voice acting.
Happy birthday to Zachary Levi and Nicholas Galitzine: Rounding things off, happy birthday today to Shazam! and Chuck actor Zachary Levi, who turns 46, alongside Masters of the Universe star Nicholas Galitzine, turning 32.
That’s your lot for today — until next time.
That’s all for today.
