World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Digger and Anne Hathaway’s Verity lead a shared UK/US Friday, a separate US-only slate follows and happy birthday to Lorraine Bracco.
Morning all — a starry Friday releasing day on both sides of the Atlantic. Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
A packed Friday at UK cinemas: Leading today’s slate, and opening in the US on the same day, is Warner Brother’s Digger, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first English-language film since The Revenant. It stars Tom Cruise as the most powerful man in the world racing to prove himself humanity’s saviour. This is Cruise’s first picture under his new Warner Bros. deal. (It has to be said, initial reviews are decidedly mixed!) Also sharing a UK/US release today is Amazon MGM’s Verity, Michael Showalter’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller, with Dakota Johnson’s struggling ghostwriter drawn into Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett’s increasingly sinister household. Elsewhere on UK screens: Universal’s Girls Like Girls (Hayley Kiyoko’s directorial debut), Underground Slate’s Fight Like A Girl, MetFilm’s The Weight, plus smaller entries Derek Vs Derek, Extra Geography, Kikuyu Land. The interesting mystery/horror Child, which I reviewed a few weeks ago, also gets a UK release today. For the nostalgic, Take It Or Leave It – the Madness autobiography – returns in a 4K restoration.
Meanwhile, over in the US: American screens get their own separate slate today, several with no UK date yet. Greenwich Entertainment’s comedy-drama The Scout goes wide, Kino Lorber’s war drama Atonement opens in select cities, and Ketchup Entertainment’s Rolling Loud: The Movie — a starry hip-hop comedy featuring Owen Wilson, Travis Scott and Ski Mask the Slump God — lands in limited release alongside the documentary The Trial Of Alec Baldwin.
Happy birthday to Lorraine Bracco: Rounding things off, happy birthday today to Goodfellas and The Sopranos actress Lorraine Bracco, who turns 71.
That’s your lot for today — between Cruise’s apocalyptic mission and Hathaway’s psychological thriller, there’s plenty to fill a weekend cinema trip. Until next time.
