World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
Dune: Part Three breaks a BFI IMAX record, Narnia’s trailer beats Barbie, Tom Holland’s next film & Julianne Moore in Rome.
Morning, all. After yesterday’s Netflix earnings, the streamer has some happier numbers to boast about, and there’s a record-breaker on London’s South Bank.
Dune: Part Three breaks a BFI IMAX record: The BFI IMAX, the UK’s largest screen, sold 33,000 advance tickets for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three in its first 24 hours on sale, with a gross of more than £880,000. That’s a new first-day presale record for the venue, beating the £750,000 of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and well ahead of Dune: Part Two‘s £366,000. The film opens on 18 December, with previews in IMAX 70mm from 15 December, and the BFI IMAX will also be showing Dune and Dune: Part Two from 11 December. For context, The Odyssey went on to sell more than 100,000 admissions at the BFI IMAX by mid-August, which made it the cinema’s highest-grossing film ever, at 95% occupancy. I just want to know why those other 5% of the seats never got sold!
Narnia’s trailer beats Barbie: Following the earlier trailer news I reported last Wednesday, Netflix revealed after its earnings call that the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has been viewed more than 481 million times in its first seven days, according to the tracking company WaveMetrix, which is more than the first week of the Barbie trailer. A cosmic lion singing a world into existence to Led Zeppelin has clearly struck a chord, and it’s the best news Netflix’s film division has had all month.
Tom Holland’s next film: Sony Pictures has pre-emptively bought Penthouse, an original idea by Drew Pearce, the writer of The Fall Guy and Iron Man 3, as a starring vehicle for Tom Holland. It will be produced by Holland’s company Billy17 and Pearce’s Point of No Return, though there’s no word yet on a director or a release date.
Julianne Moore and Jesse Eisenberg in Rome: Julianne Moore and Jesse Eisenberg have been at the Rome Film Fest to support the Italian opening of Eisenberg’s The Debut, which closed the London Film Festival last weekend. Moore says she thinks it’s one of the best scripts she has read. I agree…. my review is still to follow (my backlog is down to 4 reviews now!) but it was an easy 5 stars from me. Quite delightful and hilarious.
Birthdays: Catherine Deneuve, star of Belle de Jour, turns 83 today, and Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc Brown in the Back to the Future films, turns 88. Also celebrating are Jeff Goldblum (74) of Jurassic Park/World and Bob Odenkirk (64), who appeared in Nobody and Little Women.
That’s all for today.
