Poster for the celebration of the BAFTA Nominations for Film in 2026

It’s January 27th 2026 and the BAFTA Nominations are out!

So, hot on the heels of the nominations for the 2026 Oscars, the BAFTA nominations for 2026 were announced. They neatly reflect the attitude of the more British centric voters to the qualities of British Film, with films like “Pillion” and “I Swear” getting a deserved look-in while the Oscars completely passed them by.

The following is the distribution of the awards, with One Battle After Another again leading the field:

Wicked For Good got a couple of nominations, but Train Dreams largely lost out and again I’m also surprised that Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” came away empty handed.

Here then are the nominations in all of the categories. As always, links are provided to my reviews of the films, where I have so far seen them.

Best Film

Can’t really argue with this set of films, all of which were including in the 10 shortlisted for the Oscars. No surprises here.

Best Director

Once again, Guillermo del Toro is missed off the nominations list for “Frankenstein“. The only addition to this list from the Oscars (6 noms instead of 5) is Yorgos Lanthinmos.

Leading Actress

Chase Infiniti is the addition to this list. Again, 6 noms instead of 5. Infiniti was great (and beyond!) but rather struck me as a Supporting rather than as a Leading role.

Leading Actor

Think this is a very strong list for Best Actor. My only objection to the Oscar list was the lack of Plemons on the list. I bet a lot of US observers are saying “WTF is I Swear“?? – I’m not sure it got a US release. Their loss if so!

Best Supporting Actor

No fellow nod for Delroy Lindo for Sinners here, but a crowd-pleasing inclusion of Peter Mullen’s kind-hearted caretake from I Swear.

Supporting Actress.

Comparing the BAFTAs the Oscars, Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value) missed out, but is replaced by Odessa A’zion (which the Flickering Dreams team predicted for the Oscar list) and a well-deserved Emily Blunt for Hamnet.

Adapted Screenplay

So Frankenstein and Train Dreams are dropped out of the Oscar list and Wallis Island and Pillion are excellent choices to be added in.

Original Screenplay

All change! Blue Moon and It Was Just an Accident are out and I Swear and The Secret Agent are in.

Casting:

So, Hamnet is out and Sentimental Value is in. Given the latter had most of the cast nominated, then the omission from the Oscars seemed odd. But then you could say the same about Hamnet.

Animated Film:

  • Elio – Mary Alice Drumm, Adrian Molina, Madelina Sharafian, Domee Shi
  • Little Amélie or the Character of Rain – Claire LaCombe, Edwina Liard, Henri Magalon, Nidia Santiago, Maïlys Vallade
  • Zootopia 2 – Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Yvett Merino

The real surprise here is the lack of KPop Demon Hunters! Which I’d back to win the Oscar!

Production Design:

For the first time in this listing, a category where the BAFTA nominations exactly match the Oscar ones.

Cinematography:

And another exact match!

Costume Design:

The very odd Academy choice of Avatar: Fire and Ash is reversed to be replaced by “Wicked For Good” – completely overlooked by the Academy.

Editing:

Sentimental Value is out and A House of Dynamite is in, but that’s the only change.

Makeup and Hair:

  • Frankenstein – Mike Hill, Cliona Furey, Jordan Samuel
  • Hamnet – Nicole Stafford
  • Marty Supreme – Kyra Panchenko, Kay Georgiou & Mike Fontaine
  • Sinners – Ken Diaz, Mike Fontaine, Shunika Terry
  • Wicked For Good – Frances Hannon, Laura Blount, Mark Coulier & Sarah Nuth

A second nomination for Wicked.

Sound:

  • F1 – Gareth John, Al Nelson, Juan Peralta, Gary A. Rizzo, Gwendowlyn Yates Whittle
  • Frankenstein – Greg Chapman, Christian Cooke, Nelson Ferreira, Nathan Robitaile, Brad Zoern
  • One Battle After Another – Jose Antonio Garcia, Christopher Scarabosio, Tony Villaflor
  • Sinners – Benny Burt, Steve Boeddeker, David V. Butler, Felipe Pacheco, Chris Welcker
  • Warfare – Glenn Freemantle, Mitch Low, Ben Barker, Howard Bargraff, Richard Spooner

I wrote in my review for Warfare “The year is yet young, but at the moment I would predict a nomination and possibly a win for the Oscar Sound award.” Well, I was wrong about that for the Oscars, but I’m pleased to see it in the list for the BAFTAs at least.

Special Visual Effects:

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash – Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, Daniel Barrett
  • F1 – Ryan Tudhope, Nicolas Chevallier, Robert Harrington, Keith Dawson
  • Frankenstein – Dennis, Berardi, Aya Burgess, Ivan Busquets, José Granell
  • How To Train Your Dragon – Christian Mánz, Francois Lambert, Glen McIntosh, Terry Palmer
  • The Lost Bus – Charlie Noble, David Zaretti, Russell Bowen, Brandon K. McLaughlin

At least BAFTA got it right by not nominating Jurassic World Rebirth: a truly bizarre Oscar choice in my book. Sinners also misses out (for once!) But nice to see How To Train Your Dragon at least get something: go Belfast!

Original Score:

Snap with the Oscar nominations.

Film Not In The English Language:

Another complete match to the Oscars.

Documentary Feature:

  • 2000 Meters To Andriivka – Mstyslav Chernov, Michelle Mizner, Raney Aronson-Rath
  • Apocalypse in the Tropics – Petra Costa, Alessandra Orofino
  • Cover-Up – Laura Poitras, Mark Obenhaus, Olivia Streisand, Yoni Golijev
  • Mr. Nobody Against Putin – David Borenstein, Helle Faber, Radovan Sibrt, Alzbeta Karásková
  • The Perfect Neighbor – Sam Bisbeem Geeta Gandbhir, Alisa Payne

Only the last two survive from the Oscars list.

British Short Animation

  • Cardboard – J.P. Vine
  • Michaela Manas
  • Malina

British Short Film

  • Welcome Home Freckles – Huiju Park, Nathan Hendren
  • Magid / Zafar – Luis Hindman, Sufiyaan Salem, Aidan Robert Brooks
  • Nostalgie – Kathryn Ferguson, Stacey Gregg, Marc Robinson, Kath Mattock
  • Terence – Edem Kelman, Noah Reich
  • This is Endemetriosis – Georgie Wileman, Matt Houghton, Harriette Wright

Children’s & Family Film

  • Arco – Ugo Bienvenu, Félix De Givry, Sophie Mas, Natalie Portman
  • Boong – Lakshmipriya Devi, Ritech Sidhwani
  • Lilo & Stitch – Dean Fleischer Camp, Jonathan Eirich
  • Zootropolis 2 – Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Yvett Merino

Interesting that How To Train Your Dragon missed out in this category… I thought it would be in there.

I shall, of course, be posting a traditional “Will Win/Should Win” set of predictions ahead of this year’s Oscar ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, on March 15th.

Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema

  • Clare Binns

Clare is the Creative Director of Picturehouse Cinemas and Picturehouse Entertainment. A big day for them!

Outstanding British Film.

Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director or Producer

  • Pillion – Harry Lighton
  • The Cremony – Jack King, Hollie Bryan, Lucy Meer
  • Wasteman – Cal McMau, Hunter Andrews, Eoin Doran
  • A Want In Her – Myrid Carten
  • My Father’s Shadow – Akinola Davies Jnr., Wale Davies

My heart suggests that this might be Harry Lighton’s award, but I am short of film watches in this category.

The BAFTA Fellowship

Announced on the night.

EE Rising Star Award

The only award voted for by the British public, so an interesting popularity contest! The nominees this year are:

Given the outpouring of public love for I Swear, might it go Aramayo’s way? But Caton and Infiniti seem strong contenders too. Friends have raved about Lollipop, but I have yet to see it.
