World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
There’s a proper power shift happening at the Nigerian box office; China’s given us a fresh look at how Spider-Man and The Odyssey are getting on there; and the Jonas Brothers are back at Camp Rock.
Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
Streaming-wise, Camp Rock 3 lands on Disney+ today, with Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas returning for a new generation of campers. Not one I will be personally clamouring to see, but there must by people out there for which this particular brand of nostalgia works.
Elsewhere, the 2026 re-release of 1998’s Practical Magic also hits UK and US cinemas today, twenty-eight years on and ready to find an audience ahead of its surprising sequel, due on September 11th.
The quieter but bigger story though might be out of Nigeria: according to a Chinese diplomatic envoy speaking this week, Nollywood has now overtaken Hollywood at the Nigerian box office for the first half of this year, with local hits like Call of My Life and Love and New Notes comfortably outperforming the American imports — only Michael managed to crack the equivalent of £4 million there among Hollywood titles. It’s a genuinely striking flip from a market that was 70% Hollywood as recently as 2019, and speaks to just how confidently Nigerian cinema’s been telling its own stories lately.
In China, fresh weekend figures show Spider-Man: Brand New Day holding onto the number-one spot with its 12-day total passing $185 million there, while Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has just taken $6.9 million from IMAX-only previews ahead of its wide opening this Friday — worth watching closely, given China’s appetite for Hollywood tentpoles has been notoriously patchy since the pandemic. Homegrown hit Kung Fu Soccer dropped out of the top five for the first time since its July release, though it remains the summer’s biggest earner overall at over $318 million.
Back on this side of the world, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie continues its run here in the UK (it’s been out since August 5th) ahead of its American and Canadian bow next Friday. My 6-year-old grandson Jack demanded a repeat viewing (with his Mum this time rather than me… phew!) which indicates just how well the film went down with that demographic!
