The UK-Ireland box office chart, The Mosquito Bowl’s trailer, Drishyam nears Rs 500 crore, Nollywood’s second weekend, Korea’s anime champion & RJ Mitte is mourned.
Morning, all. Yesterday I promised you the UK-Ireland chart, and it’s here. Tuesday also means our weekly lap of the world’s other film industries, with a lot to get through.
UK and Ireland box office: Rob Savage’s Other Mommy topped the weekend chart with a £2 million opening from 526 cinemas, a £3,770 average. It was a photo finish, as it edged Verity, down to second in its second weekend, by just £33,263, and Verity‘s total in the UK and Ireland now stands at £7.3 million. The Social Reckoning opened in fifth place with £621,000 from 610 cinemas, a low average of £1,020 per cinema, while The Uprising opened in seventh with roughly £540,000 (converted from Variety’s dollar figure). Digger dropped out of the top five altogether.
The Mosquito Bowl trailer lands: Netflix has released the full trailer for Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl, which opens in select AMC cinemas in the US on 30 October, the first Netflix-AMC partnership since KPop Demon Hunters, before arriving on Netflix on 25 November. Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis play four college football stars who enlist in the Marines after Pearl Harbor, with Pat McAfee in the supporting cast. It follows a legendary football game played before the invasion of Okinawa, and of the 65 players, 15 died within a year. Based on Buzz Bissinger’s book, it has its world premiere at AFI Fest on 22 October.
Bollywood: Drishyam nears Rs 500 crore: Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam: The Conclusion is still going strong. After an estimated Rs 64 crore net second weekend in India, it crossed Rs 300 crore net (about $31 million) in India and became the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026. Following a Monday dip to Rs 6.25 crore, its worldwide gross stands at Rs 489.74 crore (about $51 million). Pinkvilla puts its overseas total at $11.25 million.
Nollywood holds steady: In Nigeria, Agbara Nla: The Return took ₦73.3 million (about $55,000) from 12,154 admissions in its second weekend, taking its total to ₦282.8 million (about $213,000), and it’s still the only film at the top of the chart. It also began a regional rollout in Liberia on 9 October. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Oscar entry Dear Ajayi, which premiered at Venice Days, where it won prizes for its cast and performances, has added the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival and El Gouna to its festival run, with El Gouna hosting its North African premiere. It gets a wider Nigerian release on 13 November.
South Korea’s anime champion: The Japanese anime Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island topped the South Korean box office over the weekend, winning a razor-thin admissions contest against the local political thriller The Assassin(s), with $3.13 million from 407,895 admissions and a 29.7% share of the weekend market. The market as a whole was down, at $10.5 million against $12.6 million the previous weekend, and The Odyssey finished fourth in its tenth weekend.
RJ Mitte, 1992–2026: RJ Mitte, who played Walter White Jr. in all five seasons of Breaking Bad, has died at 34, according to his representative. His representative has confirmed that he died by suicide on Monday. Like his character, he lived with cerebral palsy, and he was an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and president of his own charity, the Mitte Foundation, which challenged stereotypes about disability. He shared a SAG Award for best drama ensemble for Breaking Bad‘s final season in 2014, and had been promoting a new film, Talking to Strangers, only days before. His representative described him as a beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate advocate for disability rights. How extremely sad for this talented young man. (If you’re struggling, Samaritans in the UK and Ireland are on 116 123, and in the US you can call or text 988. If you are in another country, seek out your local counselling service… or just talk to someone you trust: lots of people love you, they really do.)
Birthdays: Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Les Miserables, The Trial of the Chicago 7) turns 55 today, who is, I suspect, quite pleased to be celebrating with a Tarantino play in the diary. Also celebrating are Paul Simon (85), whose songs defined The Graduate, and The X-Files creator Chris Carter (69).
That’s all for today.
