TIFF’s People’s Choice race stays properly wide open: With tomorrow’s ceremony fast approaching, the contest for this year’s People’s Choice Award — traditionally the “starting gun” of the Oscar race, with 22 past winners going on to Best Picture nominations and seven converting into wins — remains genuinely unpredictable. Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine carries obvious pedigree (McDonagh previously won for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, though TIFF audiences rarely reward the same director twice), while Andrew Scott’s Elsinore has kept building on its rapturous Telluride reception. Siân Heder’s Being Heumann opened the festival to a genuinely moving response, with Ruth Madeley’s performance as disability rights pioneer Judy Heumann drawing much of the attention, and Julianne Moore’s turn in The Debut has been quietly building buzz of its own since Monday’s premiere.
