World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
Japan’s Aichi Women’s Film Festival and Barcelona’s Korean Film Festival both get underway and Spider-Man keeps chasing the record books.
A really quiet start to September in Movie News, ahead of the Venice Film Festival opening tomorrow. But here’s what I have for Movie News in the last 24 hours.
Japan’s focus on women in cinema opens tomorrow: The Aichi International Women’s Film Festival kicks off in Nagoya, Japan tomorrow, running through to the 6th. With Lee Eun-Jung The Road Home For Two and Sivaranjini J’s Victoria opening the Festival, the programme also includes Sora’s Learning Place (of which I know nothing!) and the South Korean drama Living in Jeju, the directorial debut for South Korean Lee Eunjung. This is the 31st running of the festival and it includes collaborative programs with the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Taiwan International Film Festival, as well as a special feature on renowned Korean female director Yim Soon-rye.
Meanwhile, in Spain: we maintain that focus on the cinema of the Far East, since the Korean Film Festival in Barcelona also opens tomorrow, running through to the 6th as well. The festival starts with a Gala showing of The Kings Warden: set in the Joseon Dynasty in 1457, it is said to tell the story of the 6th king of Joseon, Danjong, who was exiled to Yeongwol, Gangwon Province. The festival also includes a stream examining “Women in the Cinema of Park Chan-wook”. The film festival takes place at Cinemes Girona in Barcelona if you are lucky enough to be in the vicinity. It’s a nice reminder of how much South Korean culture punches above its weight in terms of exporting its content across Europe.
Spider-Man keeps chasing the record books: Meanwhile, the more familiar business of Hollywood box office rumbles on, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day continuing to close in on Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘s $936 million North American total after this weekend’s confirmed $2.33 billion worldwide milestone. At this rate, passing it looks like a matter of when rather than if — expect an update the moment it happens.
