World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
Spider-Man: Brand New Day sets a new box office speed record, Sarajevo Film Festival wraps up its 2026 edition, Tom Hanks lines up his next book adaptation, and a sad farewell to Phyllida Law.
Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
Spider-Man breaks the $800 million speed record: As mentioned repeatedly over the past week, Spider-Man: Brand New Day just won’t stop setting records: the film crossed the $800 million mark at the US box office, making it the fastest movie in history to hit that milestone. Destin Daniel Cretton’s film continues to run rings around the rest of 2026’s release calendar, and with awards-season chatter already starting to build around the debut of the character played by Sadie Sink, this one shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.
Sarajevo Film Festival closes out its run: Elsewhere, the Sarajevo Film Festival wraps its 2026 edition today after a week that included Sinda Agha’s Grief Room taking home the £15,000 Thelma Schoonmaker short film prize, alongside a public discussion yesterday on the state of public film funding across the region. A smaller festival than the Cannes-and-Venice heavyweights, but one that’s built a real reputation for shining a light on underseen Balkan and Central European filmmaking.
Tom Hanks lines up his next literary adaptation: On the deals front, Warner Bros. has locked down film rights to Allen Levi’s bestseller Theo of Golden, with Tom Hanks attached to star. Details on director and supporting cast are still under wraps, but given Hanks’s recent run of literary adaptations, this feels like exactly the sort of gentle, character-driven awards hopeful he’s been gravitating towards lately.
And in one final, sad piece of news: British screen and stage actor Phyllida Law has died aged 94, closing out a career spanning more than 140 credits over six decades. Her personal manager confirmed she died peacefully at home, surrounded by family. Law was the mother of Emma and Sophie Thompson, and was a beloved character actor in her own right; tributes have understandably been pouring in across British film and theatre today.
That’s all for today. Come back tomorrow for news on the week’s new releases.
