Morning all — after yesterday’s box office deep-dive, today’s a rather more scattered, international sort of round-up: France, the south of France again, and a cross-continental streaming deal, before closing on some sad news that only broke widely yesterday. Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
Call My Agent! gets its movie moment: Netflix has dropped the first official trailer for Call My Agent! The Movie, the long-awaited feature continuation of the beloved French talent-agency comedy, ahead of its 10th September launch in France. Directed by Émilie Noblet from a script by original creator Fanny Herrero and Lison Daniel, it sees Camille Cottin returning as former agent Andréa — a genuinely exciting one for fans of the show’s starry cameo-stuffed episodes, and worth keeping an eye on for a wider release once the French run gets going. Provence’s arts festival turns the spotlight on music docs: Elsewhere in the south of France, as also previewed on Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo’s ‘Take’ podcast, the Provence Arts Festival Du Film has announced it’ll spotlight acclaimed music documentaries this year, with a particular focus on Elvis Presley and John Lennon on screen. A smaller, more specialised event than Cannes up the coast, but a nice reminder of how much genre-specific programming goes on beneath the festival circuit’s bigger headlines.
CJ ENM strikes an Amazon deal in India: On the deals front, and keeping it ‘global’, one of interest to my many readers in India. CJ ENM Hong Kong — the international production arm of the Korean entertainment giant — has sold a package of six Thai dramas, produced by True CJ Creations, to Amazon MX Player India. A relatively small transaction in the scheme of things, but one more data point in the growing pipeline of Korean-adjacent content finding its way into the Indian streaming market.
And in one final, sad piece of news: Word has spread over the last day of the passing of Shelley Fabares, the actress and singer best known for The Donna Reed Show and her Emmy-nominated run on Coach, who died on Saturday in Los Angeles aged 82, surrounded by her family including husband Mike Farrell. Fabares also starred alongside Elvis Presley in three films across the 1960s — Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake. Her family’s statement remembered her as a woman of “kindness, loyalty, wit, courage, and beautiful spirit.” A genuinely interesting career, and a sad note to end on today.
