World Movie News: The Last 24 Hours
Warner Bros. film chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy are out as the Paramount merger finally bites, a farewell to Animal House’s Mary Louise Weller, and happy birthday to Clive Owen and Alicia Vikander.
Morning all — the Paramount-Warner Bros. saga we’ve been tracking all week just claimed its first major casualties, on the very weekend their own film opened. Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
De Luca and Abdy out at Warner Bros. as the merger finally bites: As trailed earlier this week, the Paramount Skydance-Warner Bros. Discovery merger is set to formally close on the 6th. One detail that passed me by until now: the combined company is being renamed Skydance from that date, rather than keeping either the Paramount or Warner Bros. name — and the merger’s first real casualty has landed right on cue, with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy confirmed to be exiting the studio. Their last day is the 6th too, meaning the day they leave is the very day the renamed Skydance takes over. The pair, brought in during WBD’s early David Zaslav era from MGM, oversaw a genuinely filmmaker-friendly run that included Sinners, A Minecraft Movie, Weapons and Oscar winners One Battle After Another and Superman — but also costlier misfires like Furiosa and Joker: Folie à Deux, and this weekend’s Digger, which is shaping up to be one of 2026’s biggest. David Ellison is instead elevating Paramount’s own Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg to oversee both studios’ theatrical output, a structural change De Luca/Abdy’s existing contracts — which ran through 2030 and report directly to the CEO — simply couldn’t accommodate. Reports suggest De Luca and Abdy were blindsided, learning their fate from press reports before Ellison met them in person to confirm it. It’s a genuinely significant signal about the kind of studio Warner Bros. is about to become under new ownership, and one this newsletter will keep watching closely.
A farewell to Animal House’s Mary Louise Weller: Away from the corporate drama, actress Mary Louise Weller has died, a day before what would have been her 80th birthday, after a brief illness. Best remembered as Pi House sorority sister Mandy Pepperidge in John Landis’s 1978 comedy classic Animal House, Weller — a former Ford model — also appeared in The Bell Jar and starred opposite Chuck Norris in Forced Vengeance, alongside TV guest spots on Kojak, Starsky & Hutch and CHiPs.
Happy birthday to Clive Owen and Alicia Vikander: Rounding things off, happy birthday today to Children Of Men, Gemini Man and Closer actor Clive Owen, who turns 62. (I was once walking along the South Bank in London in a swirling fog down the old section by ‘The Clink’ when who emerged out of the fog standing there in the middle of the street but Clive Owen, looking for all the world like the next James Bond. He was reminding himself of his lines, as he was about to shoot a scene, so I obviously didn’t disturb him. But a memorable encounter!). Also turning 38 today is one of my favourite actresses, Alicia Vikander, star of Ex Machina, The Danish Girl, Firebrand and many other favourites. Let’s hope Michael Fassbender has remembered a cake!
That’s all for today.
