Andrew Scott storms into the Best Actor Oscar race with Elsinore at Telluride, the 53rd festival continues in Colorado, and Happy Birthday to Idris Elba and Rosie Perez.
Morning all — Telluride’s runs into its penultimate day today in the long Labor Day weekend and it’s thrown up a genuine awards-season shake-up in the process. Here’s what happened in the world of movies during the last 24 hours.
Andrew Scott leaps into the Best Actor race: Simon Stone’s Elsinore had its world premiere at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival on Friday night, and the reviews landing over the last day have been extraordinary. Scott plays Ian Charleson, the Chariots of Fire star who continued performing Hamlet at London’s National Theatre while dying of AIDS in 1990, and critics are calling it career-best work — Variety’s Owen Gleiberman labelled the film an “art-house crowd-pleaser,” while multiple outlets are now placing Scott alongside John Malkovich (Wild Horse Nine) and Matt Damon (The Odyssey) at the very top of the Best Actor conversation. Olivia Colman, Billie Piper and Johnny Flynn round out a supporting cast that’s also drawing praise, and Focus Features already has the film in awards position. Given Scott’s near-miss with All of Us Strangers a few years back (a criminal omission by the Academy in my book) and his stonking performance in Pressure (review to follow today) building up a head of pressure, this feels like the campaign that might finally get him there.
Telluride heads into its final day tomorrow: The Colorado festival closes out tomorrow after what’s already been four packed days, including the North American premiere of Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, a guest-director programme curated by Rebecca Hall, and tributes dedicated to the late production designer Dean Tavoularis. Between Telluride and Venice both firing off major awards contenders in the same fortnight, autumn’s Oscar race is very much underway.
Happy birthday to two of the industry’s best: And in a new little addition to this roundup, Happy Birthday today to Idris Elba, who turns 54, and Rosie Perez, who turns 62 — with Roger Waters and Lauren Lapkus also celebrating birthdays today.
