Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner in a supermarket in One Night Only in Movie News

Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped a perfectly respectable 60% in its second frame — which sounds brutal until you realise that still means $143 million over three days, taking its domestic total to $653 million in just under two weeks. For context, that’s roughly what most “successful” blockbusters manage across their entire run.

The weekend’s new arrivals in the US had a rather harder time of it by comparison: Universal’s high-concept rom-com One Night Only — Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner in a “the Purge, but for sex” premise, which is certainly a pitch — limped to just $6 million, continuing what’s been a genuinely miserable year for the romance genre outside of Wuthering Heights (which is nearly at $250m globally). Super Troopers 3 did marginally better with $3.9 million while Ice Cream Man, Eli Roth’s slasher, added a further $2 million in its second US weekend, having only just opened here in the UK on Friday.

Elsewhere internationally, India saw the fantasy/horror/comedy Korean Kanakaraju opening alongside the Malayalam-language action thriller Thudakkam. Plus there was a global release of the K-Pop band ATEEZ’s concert film Light the Way. All fighting for space amongst the major Hollywood tentpole movies.

To end this Sunday news roundup on a more whimsical note, something to prove that Black Bear are challenging A24 and Neon for the title of ‘most innovative production company’ they have teamed with IKEA Australia on a fun co-marketing initiative. It follows the release of the steamy new trailer for the Olivia Colman/Alexander Skarsgård movie Wicker, due for a release at the back end of October. In the film, a bit like Pinocchio, Colman’s fishwife character conjures up a husband made of wicker played by Skarsgård. (Skarsgård has commented (to Entertainment Week) “Most male actors dream of playing Hamlet at some point in their career. I never did. My dream was always to have nipples made out of wicker”!) Unlike Pinocchio, instead of his wooden nose getting bigger…, well, use your imagination. The raunchy trailer has launched a thousand internet memes and jumping on the back of that, IKEA Australia’s Instagram account posted a photo of their handmade AUD$199 rattan bench telling followers that it was “made from husband material.” The caption says “If you know, you know.” One Mann’s Movies does know… and we approve!
