Asia Pacific Screen Awards reveals a properly international slate: The Asia Pacific Screen Academy unveiled its 19th edition nominations today, pulling together 36 films from 32 countries and regions ahead of the 30th October ceremony on the Gold Coast of Australia. Hamaguchi Ryusuke’s All Of A Sudden (a France-Japan-Germany-Belgium co-production) and Abinash Bikram Shah’s Elephants In The Fog (Nepal-Germany-Brazil-France-Norway) lead with three nominations apiece, both up for Best Film, Best Director and Best Performance, going up against Sompot Chidgasornpongse’s 9 Temples To Heaven and Shahrbanoo Sadat’s No Good Men among others. A genuinely striking 69% of nominated directors are on their first or second feature — a proper reminder that this awards season isn’t just Venice, Telluride and the usual Hollywood suspects.
The overdue UK-Ireland National Cinema Weekend chart finally lands: As flagged over the last couple of editions, the confirmed figures for National Cinema Weekend have now surfaced. Holdovers and re-releases dominated rather than new titles, with Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day holding top spot for a sixth consecutive weekend on £1.6m (a 41% drop), pushing its UK total to £96.3m — now the fifth-highest-grossing film ever in the territory, closing in on Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s £97.3m. Universal’s The Odyssey held second for the sixth weekend running with £1.5m, up to £82.8m and now the 11th-highest-grossing film ever in the UK. True Brit’s The Death Of Robin Hood — this past Friday’s headline UK release — could only manage 11th place amid all the discounted-ticket holdover traffic, a reminder that £4 tickets don’t always translate into new-release momentum.
